Tips for Pennsylvania parents to keep teen drivers safe

While it is of course possible for drivers of all ages to be involved in car accidents, teen drivers are some of the most prone. These incidents can lead to serious injuries and even death. According to the PennDOT website Just Drive PA, for people between the ages of 16 and 24, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death.

There are a variety of things that contribute to car accidents involving teen drivers to occur. These include:

  • Improper or careless turning
  • Driving too fast for conditions
  • Driver distraction
  • Driver inexperience

While the actions a teen driver takes while behind the wheel are of course his or her decisions, there are things parents can do to try to help their kids be better drivers.

As is the case with many things related to parenting the earlier one starts, the better. This means talking about safe driving behaviors before they become old enough to drive is a good place to start. Logically, parents should be aware of the rules of the road before undertaking this task. In addition, the car used to teach a teen to drive should be safe. Parents should also model good driving behaviors themselves.

Once they reach the age when you can teach them how to drive, go to a parking lot or area where there is not a lot of traffic so that they can become comfortable behind the wheel. Provide them a lot of time to practice in different types of weather before easing them into more difficult driving situations.

When a teen is responsible for a car accident that results in injuries they may face legal action and even be hurt themselves. The best way to avoid this situation is to drive in a safe manner.
