Steps pedestrians can take to stay safe

Walking is a part of most peoples’ lives. While most people probably don’t think about how many steps they log each day, for others it is the primary type of exercise they engage in or, their main source of transportation. Regardless of how much, or why, someone walks there are things all can do to try to avoid being involved in an accident with a vehicle.

When walking out of doors there are general things that can help to keep a pedestrian safe. The first is to be aware of one’s surroundings and not wear headphones. Using sidewalks when available and walking against traffic while wearing bright clothing or a reflective vest is also smart. Since it is easier to see a group of people rather than just one, walking in a group is also safer.

There are other things that a pedestrian can do when crossing a street to try to stay safe as well. While crossing at a crosswalk with a signal is preferable, it does not automatically mean that a pedestrian will be safer. When crossing at a crosswalk with a signal pedestrians still need to look left, right and then left again, before setting foot into the crosswalk. Also, it is best to always proceed on the assumption that drivers do not see the pedestrian.

Pedestrians who are struck and injured by a vehicle may be able to recover damages for their injuries. The first step is to contact a personal injury lawyer to determine what one’s options are.
