Do not leave the scene of an accident

Every year in Pennsylvania sees countless accidents on the roads. Many of these incidents leave the victims with serious injuries, long-term disabilities or worse. Yet so many of these devastating events could have been prevented by the responsible party taking a little more care. Unfortunately, a single mistake is all it takes for disaster to strike and everyone else on the road is endangered as a consequence.

Some accidents are the result of pure misfortune. They are no less devastating, but sometimes no one is truly at fault. However, many accidents are caused by drivers who go too fast, ignore signals and road signs or choose to drive drunk. Others disregard hazards or even allow themselves to be distracted by a mobile phone or other device.

If you become involved in such an accident, your next steps are important. Although you may feel upset, shaken and just want to go home, it is important not to leave the scene until you are certain it is legal to do so. This usually means the police need to be contacted first, particularly if anyone has been hurt. If this is the case, it is also vital to call for medical assistance as soon as possible, or get someone else to do so.

As this article on road accidents mentions, it is also wise to exchange details with any other drivers involved and to collect the names, numbers and addresses of any passengers or witnesses where possible. Try to make a note of as much information about the crash as you can, including the time, date and weather conditions. Photographs of any damage can also be useful. All of these details may help your case if you decide to make a claim. An attorney may also be able to provide invaluable assistance as you pursue compensation for your injuries.
