Start of school is a good time to address bike safety

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2016 | Firm News, Pedestrian Accidents

School is back in session, and many of Philadelphia’s future scholars will be hopping on their bicycles and pedaling their way to class. But the start of school can also bring an increase in traffic on our roads. And while you may feel some apprehension about your child traversing the area’s streets, there are some things you can do to help ensure his or her safety.

One of the most important steps to take is instructing your child to take the safest route possible. The best routes are those that are quiet and are void of busy roads. Also, your child should stick to paths when available and observe all traffic signals and signs.

It is strongly preferable that your child always wears a helmet while riding. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proper helmet use among children between 4 and 15 years of age would prevent approximately 45,000 head injuries every year.

And it is a good idea to give your child’s bike a safety check. Examine every part of the bike including the tires, pedals, brakes, chain, seat, and handlebars. Tighten, replace and adjust all the parts as necessary. If lack knowledge about bicycle mechanics, a sporting goods store or bicycle shop could perform the service.

Hopefully, this school year will bring your good grades, fun with friends and lots of safe bike rides to school and other locations. But even the most conscientious child is vulnerable when crossing streets or riding near traffic. And if a child is struck by an automobile, he or she could suffer serious, life-altering injuries.

If your child has been injured in an auto-bicycle accident and it appears that the negligent driver is to blame, then a Pennsylvania personal injury attorney could work on your behalf to pursue all available avenues of compensation.
