Helping The Victims Of Medication And Pharmacist Errors

In a 2006 report, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) stated that medication errors caused harm to a minimum of 1.5 million people every year, making medication errors the most common medical mistake in United States hospitals and care facilities. Some of these incidents resulted in the deaths of the patients.

When a doctor prescribes a medication, there is much more to consider than whether the drug will adequately treat the patient’s condition. The patient’s medical history and drug allergies, the potential for cross-reactions with other drugs the patient may be taking and other considerations must all be addressed before a particular medication is prescribed. Also, doctors and pharmacists have to give patients clear, accurate information about how much medication to take and when to take it.

In too many instances, however, doctors fail to address these issues and jeopardize the health of their patients. If you have suffered negative health consequences because of a medication error, you may have grounds for a medical malpractice claim against the prescribing doctor. Grounds for claims can also arise if a doctor orders the wrong medication or an incorrect dose, if staff gives you the wrong medication, or if a pharmacist fills your prescription incorrectly.
